UB Bulls Beat: And That Concludes…

The 2008-08 Buffalo Bulls basketball season.
Unable to string together consecutive stops, the Bulls suffered an 84-73 loss at Wichita State to a Shockers squad that could very well challenge for The Valley championship next season. Considering that Buffalo could very well challenge for the MAC championship, the youthful Shockers convincing victory says [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Statement Made

It got a bit hairy in the second half, as Miami whittled down a 20-point halftime deficit to but a mere two points thanks to a hot-shooting Michael Bramos and a lot of UB missed free throws, but the Bulls battled back and took command of this game thanks to some determined defense and big [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Bring On Miami

The Big Picture: Statement made. UB barely breaks a sweat in beating an ineffective Kent State squad 64-53 to go 3-1 in the MAC (11-5 overall) and move into a three-way tie for first in the MAC East with Miami and Ohio. Tonight’s win should provide the Bulls with plenty of confidence [...]

UB Bulls Beat: So Far, So Good…

Well, sort of.
The Bulls, in what can be called a “statement game” — and even a must-win if coach ‘Spoon’s squad is serious about contending for the MAC title this season — in the MAC are leading Kent State 28-23 at the half, which is good. What isn’t good is that Buffalo’s lead should [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Back from Break with A Win

The Big Picture: Bulls return from two week break proves to be successful, as UB beat UNC-Asheville, 71-52. While nobody’s going to mistake the Bulldogs for a college hoops power, Eddie Biedenbach’s squad has played a tough non-league slates — 26th toughest according to TeamRankings.Com — and they have a slew of guys [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Loss To UConn a Bitter Pill To Swallow

The Big Picture: A hot-shooting Rodney Pierce —28 points on 10-of-19 shooting — and a determined and dogged effort by the undersized Buffalo frontline was almost enough to propel the Bulls past the 2nd-ranked Connecticut Huskies and notch the biggest upset victory in Bulls history. Instead, with a chance to tie the game [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Bulls Building Big Mo’ Heading into Thursday Night Thanks to a Big Win

It doesn’t get much better than the 50-point second half, which included a 14-0 spurt by the Bulls that helped them turn a 56-44 deficit into a 58-56 lead. Sparking that 50-point second stanza was Coach ‘Spoon’s decision to go with a four guard lineup that forced Temple into a decision: Go small to run with the Bulls or go big and try to push them around. Owls’ coach Fran Dunphy decided to go big, and the result was that UB, led by the tremendous all-around play of Calvin Betts (a career high 18 points and 7 boards) and Greg Gamble (15 points, 3 dimes, 7-of-10 freebies) was able to repeatedly breakdown Temple’s D to find (and make) open shots.

UB Bulls Beat: Test Number Two

Buffalo gets a chance to put Saturday night’s debacle at Evansville behind them, as they square off with Upstate rivals Niagara (2-1) tonight. More so than the Evansville game, tonight represents a stiff test for a Bulls squad that I really still don’t know what to expect from this season. The Purple Eagles [...]

UB Bulls Beat: A Win’s A Win But…

All in all, there isn’t too much to complain about in Buffalo’s season-opening 70-62 win at Youngstown State last night. (As an aside, not only did the Bulls cover like we said they would, but our prediction of a 68-61 UB win was just about spot on) Junior forward Calvin Betts was a beast on the boards, hauling down 13 boards, as the Bulls dominated the Penguins on the glass, out-rebounding them 50-39. Rodney Pierce (21 points) hit big shots in the second half to stave off a Youngstown State rally and secure the dubbya for the Bulls, and just about everybody who got burn contributed in some way to the win.

UB Bulls Beat: Don’t Sleep on Ball State

More so than any team I’ve seen this season, Billy Taylor’s squad plays like their scholarships are on the line every second of every game. I don’t know that any team competes as hard as Peyton Stovall, Anthony Newell & Company do. Ball State doesn’t back down and they compete for the full 40 minutes.

UB Bulls Beat: Losing’s The Disease…

After starting MAC play 0-8 and not having won a road game since dinosaurs roamed the earth, UB (7-14, 1-8) got it going tonight in DeKalb, leading by double digits most of the game, as they cruised to a 89-81 win over the Northern Illinois Huskies (5-16, 2-7).

At first, I wasn’t going to make too much about Buffalo’s tonight because NIU is a truly terrible team but then I decided that, hell yeah, this is a huge win for coach ‘Spoon’s side. So pardon me while I get bit carried away.

Pick of The Day: Betting on The Bulls

Last week’s upset win by North Texas over South Alabama continued our recent slide in Pick of The Day. Going way back to our Mid-Major roots didn’t help but going back to our actual roots just might.
My UB Bulls, led by Reggie Witherspoon, a gentleman who coached me in high school, are suffering through [...]
