On The MAC: Nothing to Get Excited About

Four MAC teams took the floor on Wednesday night and three finished the night with wins. For a league — currently rated 24th by Ken Pomeroy — that needs to start racking up OOC dubbyas, this is, well, only kind of good news.
Of Wednesday’s wins, only one, Western Michigan defending their turf in a [...]

On The MAC: The 2009-10 MAC West Preview

The big question about the MAC West this season is whether anyone other than those with a close — i.e. friends and family — relationship to coaches and players in the league should really care what happens. And, to be honest, I don’t know that anybody else should. The six sides in [...]

MAC Basketball: This Shit Is Serious

Despite what Nate Linhart’s over the top WWE-worthy acting job might make you think:
The 2009 MAC tournament tips off today with four games, featuring teams seeded 5 through 12. We’re going to pick the winners in each of those four games.
Game 1: #7 Central Michigan (7-9, 11-18) vs #10 Eastern Michigan (6-10, 8-23)
Vegas [...]

UB Bulls Beat: “It’s About The Mentality”

So said Coach ‘Spoon in his post-game interview with WECK-1230 AM’s voice of the UB Bulls, Josh Wetzel. More on that later, though. Let’s get to the NFABJ breakdown.
The Big Picture: Bulls emerge triumphant in seesaw shootout with Western Michigan at The ‘Zoo, winning 74-71. Tonight’s win, a battle of teams [...]

On The MAC: Getting Pushed and Shoved Around

Based on today’s losses, the MAC could find itself sitting 16th or 17th one the rankings are updated. That isn’t the stuff multiple Big Dance bids are made of.

In fact, at this point in the season, we can look at the field of 65, and, with almost absolute certainty, say that only the MAC tournament champion will be repping the conference in that field.

It’s not that every team is scheduling like Charlie Coles and, predictably, losing to teams they should lose to. MAC teams are losing games they can and should probably win.

On The MAC: Upset Monday for the MAC?

And three teams — Eastern Michigan, Toledo, and Miami — have a chance to make some noise, open some eyes, and notch the sort of wins that might help the MAC get a second invite to the Big Dance this season.
Of those three sides, the best team, Miami, is probably the least likely [...]

On The MAC: Say It Ain’t So, Sammy…

erhaps. Since former Toledo assistant coach James Stafford says “Villegas He still came into the gym and practised his shot. He just couldn’t make shots.”, I’m going to cut Sammy some slack until there is a plea or trial.

But still. Coming on the heels of a major FBI investigation into Toledo’s football squad shaving points, the Villegas thing is just more evidence that the Toledo athletics program is a major fucking embarrassment. The MAC should strip both Toledo basketball and football of scholarships for a lack of institutional control and ban each team from post-season play for at least one year.

Toledo ain’t Las Vegas or Reno. There’s no excuse for this kind of shit to be going at a MAC school.

On The MAC: Rockets Ready To Launch In MAC West?

Kent State is the Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. of college hoops. Led by ballhawking forward Haminn Quaintance, the Golden Flashes are relentless on the defensive end, constantly attacking and pressuring opponents. In today’s game, Kent State fought back from an early double digit deficit by harassing Toledo into rushed shots and turnovers while vigorously contesting every shot the Rockets got off.

UB Bulls Beat: Is Buffalo The Worst Team In The MAC?

my UB Bulls (0-5, 6-11) might just be the worst team in the MAC. The Bulls are winless in league play for a simple reason: they don’t know how to win games.

Against the Bobcats, the Bulls had several chances to cut into Ohio’s second-half lead or even overtake them but came up empty each and every time. I don’t know what it is — inexperience and a lack of talent certainly come to mind — but the 2007-08 UB Bulls have a seemingly innate knack for making the wrong play at the wrong time.

MAC Nightcap: Chipps Put The Ugly In ESPNU

But then again, how was I to know that Giordan Watson and Central Michigan were going to put an epic display of offensive impotence, which they did for almost all of the 72-52 WMU win. So ghastly were the Chippewas on O in that first half that

MAC Nightcap: Order Restored In The MAC West?

What can we say about the MAC West other than that it’s made less sense than a Matthew Barney flick — yeah, that’s right, I called the Cremaster Cycle a flick — since league play started? Perhaps, this hump day’s results have helped things to make at least some semblance of sense.
Pre-season West faves [...]

MAC Nightcap: Six Things We Learned From The First Weekend Of League Play

The first weekend of 2008 saw a full slate of MAC games, with all 12 teams playing league games. Like usual, per the MAC, there a couple of surprises that showed just how tough and wide open the race for the MAC East is going to be while Toledo and Central Michigan, the faves [...]
