Welcome Back, March!

How sweet it is!
After running through way too much of our college hoops betting bankroll thanks to a slew of ill-advised picks back in December and January, we took some time off from Pick of the Day. The time off served us well, as we were able to refine our top secret methodology — [...]

The Mount Moves On…

And we’re in the money on another Pick of the Day, as we head to the Big Dance on Thursday and Friday.
For those planning on making some bets, we’re going to be doing a special Pick of the Day each day where we pick every Big Dance game with the spread. Thursday’s [...]

Pick of The Day: Scaling The Mount…

Is something Fang Mitchell’s Coppin State Eagles quad won’t do in tonight’s dreaded Big Dance play-in game with the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers.
Which is why The Mount -7 over Fang’s gang is our pick of the day.

MAC Nightcap: No Artistry In This MAC Grindfest

I don’t what is about being ESPN2 but something about appearing on the deuce seems to bring out the worst in MAC teams. Tonight’s 50-39 win by Kent State (24-6, 11-4) over Miami (14-14, 8-7), which notched us another win in Pick of The Day by the way, might’ve been the least watchable college hoops game televised on any channel this season. At one point during the second half, the two teams had combined for 29 turnovers and only 20 buckets. The final tally for the Golden Flashes was 19 TOs to 17 baskets while it was 15 TOs to 16 baskets for the Redhawks, a total of 34 turnovers to 33 baskets.

Pick of The Day: Golden Flashes Need It More

I’m going to say this from the jump: I don’t like betting on tonight’s Kent State-Miami game one bit. The spread on Bet US has the Golden Flashes spotting the Redhawks 6.5 points while Bodog has them giving up 7 points while Bet Vega’s live odds show the opening line was 5.5 points, which [...]

Pick Of The Day: Go With The Gaels

I’ve only bet on Mid-Major college hoops this season so I can’t speak to how the oddsmakers have done setting lines when it comes to the BCS leagues or the NBA. Based on my experience this season, it seems like when it comes to the Mid-Majors, the lines are totally random. Just take our record of 13-6 in POTD this season.

We’re new to this whole betting on college hoops things and, while we are trying to build a system that increases one’s chances of getting it right when it comes to betting on Mid-Major hoops, the fact is don’t do any quantitative analytics when we make our picks. We just look at the lines, wonder what the fuck is up, and place the bet. And it works.

Pick of The Day: Always Take SoCal over NorCal

Weather and vibe aside, the simple fact is the Eddie Sutton-coached USF Dons (6-17, 2-6) are a pretty bad team both with and without the spread, having going 1-4 in their last five by both measures. Meanwhile the USD Torerors (13-11, 6-1), have won 6 of their last 7, including a convincing 63-55 win over the 25th-ranked St. Mary’s Gaels a couple Monday’s ago. Throw in the fact that USD is 4-2 against the spread in it’s last six games and 16-4 ATS in it’s last 20 road games and spotting the Dons 3 points tonight makes it feel like I’m stealing.

Speaking of Winning Streaks

As much as we like the ch-ching of winning our bets here, we also like being right. Prior to the game we wrote that “Creighton seems on the verge of making a season ending run.” After exhilarating frosh P’allen Stinnett and sharpshooting junior guard Booker Woodfork led the Bluejays to the rout can be there be any doubt that Creighton is poised to make a move in The Valley?

Pick of The Day: Bluejays Fly High In The Valley

I tend not to bet on games involving teams from The Valley because whenever I’ve done so, I usually don’t fare so well. Why that is I’m not really sure but it could have to do with my having bad karma when it comes to The Valley because we talk shit about [...]

Pick of The Day: Getting Back To Our Roots

I’ve always prided myself on knowing much more about Mid-Major college basketball than just about, well, anybody. And unlike some folks who stumbled upon Mid-Major hoops through happenstance, I’ve been avidly following the game as it’s played in the MAC, Valley, MAAC, and Sun Belt since I was in 10th grade (1988-89). That [...]

Taking Everything We Said About Idaho State Back

Following the Bengals scintillating 69-67 comeback win over the Lumberjacks — all of which we watched on Altitude thanks to the miracle of Dish Network — it ain’t just an egg on our face but a whole fucking couple dozen.

We learned a few things about the Bengals today. 6-5 Sophomore wing Amorrow Morgan, who led Idaho State with 21 points, including a thunderous two-handed slam in the decisive second half, might just be the one of best athletes to ever take the court in Big Sky hoops.

Pick Of The Day: Chopping Wood With The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks

After losing two in a row, we’ve tweaked our approach to Pick of The Day. The biggest tweak was deciding to no longer bet on bad teams, no matter the amount of points they’re getting. Today’s Northern Arizona-Idaho State scrap taking place at the Bengals’ homecourt, Holt Arena, is our first test of this approach.

Same As It Never Was

Wednesday night’s games showed that the New Year has changed absolutely nothing in the increasingly insane 2007-08 college hoops season.
Take The Valley, Mid-Major darlings the past few years, for instance. Drake, also-rans from Valley season’s past, is 11-1 overall and 2-0 in The Valley after a 61-51 throttling of a Southern Illinois squad [...]
