I never thought I’d be able to say this, but I’ve finally found a league where the refereeing is worse than the MAC. Unfortunately for me, it just happens to be the other league that I try to follow, the Northeast Conference. I doubt Ed Gein could’ve butchered something as gruesomely as the [...]

On The NEC: Five Things We Learned Thursday Night
With 10 NEC sides squaring off in conference battle tonight, it was the kind of evening when one would think things might continue to sort themselves out. After all, it was just this past Monday when we thought that Long Island University cemented it’s status as a contender and Monmouth it’s place on the [...]
On The NEC: Rivalry Monday
It was rivalry night in the NEC, with round one of the Battle of Brooklyn between Long Island University and St. Francis and the final round in the Garden State Rivalry — Fairleigh Dickinson versus Monmouth — taking place. Fortunately for me, MSG televised both scraps so I got to take in both contests [...]
On The NEC: March Madness Strikes
Should Sacred Heart’s lead hold, and the top seeds in other low-major leagues continue to win their conference tourneys, then either the Mountaineers or Pioneers would be a shoo-in for the play-in game.
When people think March Madness they usually think of only the Big Dance but the some of the biggest surprises and upsets actually come in the non-BCS league conference tourneys. While it’s too bad that a very good RoMo squad was the victim of such an upset today the simple fact is The Mount flat-out was the better team today so congrats to their coach Milan Brown and his team. They earned the right to play for a trip the Big Dance.
On The NEC: The Higher Seeds Hold Serve
And that’s good news for the Northeast Conference. When you’re a league like the NEC that would like to raise both it’s national and local profile — the NEC paid for a March Madness insert in the Play magazine that came with last Sunday’s New York Times — you want your best teams to [...]
On The NEC: Not Yet A Believer…
Against the Blackbirds, three of the Colonials best players — Tony Lee, A.J. Jackson, and Betenko Francisco — were struggling to say the least. Especially the normally steady Lee, who had nine turnovers and four fouls. Stepping in to fill the void were soph guards Mezie Nwigwe and Jimmy Langhurst, who combined to go 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and finished with 11 and 13 points, respectively. While Nwigwe also put in solid work on the boards, snaring 7 caroms, Langhurst helped to fend off the late LIU rally by making 4-of-4 freebies down the stretch. Should it come to it, better believe RMU coach Mike Rice knows he can count that duo in the Big Dance.
I may not yet be completely convinced that Robert Morris is the team to break the NEC’s losing streak in the NCAA Tourney but I’m convinced they have a shot
On The NEC: I Can See Clearly Now…
At one point this season, it looked like any of the Robert Morris, Wagner, Sacred Heart triumvirate, and even Quinnipiac, might have a shot at winning the Northeast Conference title. Not so any longer. With Thursday’s 82-69 thumping of Sacred Heart (16-12, 13-4) on the Pioneers’ home floor, the Robert Morris Colonials (24-6, 15-2) have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are the class of the league and the out-and-out favorites to win the NEC tourney.
On The NEC: That’s Why They Call It Low-Major
Still in the mood for hoops after watching the Knicks comeback to beat the Nets, I popped open a Dogfish 90-Minute IPA that my local grocery store here in Sunset Park sells for the absurdly low price of $5.99 a four-pack and flipped on MASN to catch the last half of the Mount St. Mary’s-St. [...]
