On The MAC: Miami Clinging to…

A halftime lead so slender that it should be starring in The Hills. Thanks to Nick Winbush’s lights out 6-of-6 shooting from triple-land, the Redhawks are leading 39-36.
However, Kentucky closed the half on a 18-3 run so it looks like John Wall and Co. are about to take control of this game

On The MAC: Where are the Miami Redhawks and What Have You Done With Them?

While there a few scores on the first Friday of the college hoops season — Rider thumping 19th-ranked Mississippi State, San Diego knocking off Stanford, the Idaho Vandals pillaging Utah — the result that almost shocked me enough to put down my beer, turn the LA Galaxy vs Houston Dynamo clash for the MLS [...]

On The MAC: The 2009-10 MAC East Preview

As with the start of any college hoops season, there is a clear favorite to win the MAC — Akron in this case — but there are also plenty of reasons to think that the Zips won’t repeat as MAC champs. The most important of which may be the fact that the MAC has [...]

On The MAC: What The F*ck?!?!?

Every now and then during the college hoops season there will be a score that crawls across across the bottom of the telly and grabs your attention the way a preggers MIA rocking Paper Planes in your work cube would. Ever since MAC squads started playing intra-division matches, the only reason MAC scores have [...]

MAC Nightcap: Pity, the Poor MAC West

Another night and another pair of crushing routs for the MAC West sides in cross-division play.
Miami (6-2, 13-7) dismantled Ball State (5-3, 10-10), the West’s best team, 59-41, in a game that I thought would be a lot closer. Instead, it seems that the Cardinals couldn’t handle Michael Bramos — few teams in the [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Statement Made

It got a bit hairy in the second half, as Miami whittled down a 20-point halftime deficit to but a mere two points thanks to a hot-shooting Michael Bramos and a lot of UB missed free throws, but the Bulls battled back and took command of this game thanks to some determined defense and big [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Bring On Miami

The Big Picture: Statement made. UB barely breaks a sweat in beating an ineffective Kent State squad 64-53 to go 3-1 in the MAC (11-5 overall) and move into a three-way tie for first in the MAC East with Miami and Ohio. Tonight’s win should provide the Bulls with plenty of confidence [...]

On The MAC: Every Game Counts?

Not really when it comes to the regular season.
At this point, with the possibility of an At-Large invite to the Big Dance all but impossible for the league — my Buffalo Bulls are probably the only team that could end up in a position to make the case for an At-Large bid, but they [...]

On The MAC: Not Ready For Primetime

One thing that seems certain at this point in the 2008-09 NCAA basketball season, with November behind us, is that the MAC is going to be a one-bid league again. It’s not that MAC sides have been absolutely terrible during the first few weeks of the season, although Western Michigan (2-5) and Toledo (1-5) [...]

On The MAC: Upset Monday for the MAC?

And three teams — Eastern Michigan, Toledo, and Miami — have a chance to make some noise, open some eyes, and notch the sort of wins that might help the MAC get a second invite to the Big Dance this season.
Of those three sides, the best team, Miami, is probably the least likely [...]

On the MAC: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same…

Especially when it comes to the Charlie Coles-coached Miami Redhawks.
Change may be the mantra in DC and throughout most of the country, but not so for Coles and the Redhawks, who played their trademark, grind-it-out, value every possession, and defend for the entire shot clock style in the their matchup with UCLA late [...]

MAC Nightcap: Redhawks Fly High In Cali

All that being said, it’s just one game. While I respect Weber State and the Big Sky, this is a game the Redhawks were supposed to win, and win handily for that matter. (On a related note, Weber State easily covered the 13.5 points so we are in the moolah tonight and are now 1-1 on POTD this season.) Instead, Hayes, Michael Bramos and Co. eked out a close one. Not a bad way to start the season, but not a game that’s going to give MAC coaches nightmares like the sort coaches in the SoCon must be having about Stephen Curry right now.

On The MAC: Miami Magic to Meet Kent State

Miami might just be the toughest team to beat in the MAC tourney no matter the season. All the Redhawks did tonight was pound Ohio on both ends of the floor during the final four or so minutes of their MAC quarterfinal dogfight tonight to end the Bobcats season, winning 74-61.

With leading scorer Tim [...]

Pick of The Day: Sometimes You’ve Got To Take The Points

resh off our win in the Xavier-Rhode Island game last night, we’re starting to develop, well, a bit of an ego since we’re batting 60% for the season, and a nice wad of cash to play with. Along with that, we’re also working on a system for betting on Mid-Major hoops. One thing we’re learning is that when you have to chance to bet on a team that’s normally the favorite but is the ‘dog for a night at least, you should just about always take the points. Worked for us in the Xavier game last night and the Drake-Southern Illinois scrap last week so we’re going to take it for another test drive tonight, as Akron (18-7, 8-4) is getting 5.5 points in their MAC heavyweight tilt with Miami (13-11, 7-5) tonight.

UB Bulls Beat: The Best Is Already Behind Us

At this point in the season, with it clear that my Buffalo Bulls are destined to finish in or very close to the MAC basement, calling a game critical, important, or of significance is pointless. Fact is, the final five or six games of this season for the Bulls are all about trying to [...]
