Free tickets for UB Bulls vs Akron this Sunday

Fear the Roo my ass!
Sunday’s rematch of the 2009 MAC tournament final represents the Buffalo Bulls first chance to gain a measure of redemption for their 65-53 loss to the Zips in Clevo. Put simply, this is THE statement game for Coach ‘Spoon’s squad in January.
Rodney Pierce and Co. are 5-1 in [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

The Big Picture: Bulls survive a knife fight of a basketball with Navy, winning 63-53 at Alumni Hall in Annapolis. Coach ‘Spoon’s squad overcame a myriad of maladies, including turnovers on five consecutive possessions in the first half (UB had 22 of them… 22!), missed free throws (UB finished 16-of-25), and three-point shooting [...]

What could’ve been…

Jonas Jerebko, the 6-9 Swedish forward Detroit took with the 39th pick, was this close to hooping it up for my UB Bulls. He had actually signed a letter of intent to play for Buffalo, but backed out on after blowing up in some European hoops tournament the same summer he signed the letter. [...]

UB Bulls Beat: There’s No D in Bflo

Have to admit I was pretty giddy about getting to see my Bulls play at Wichita State in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational tonight. A lot of the giddiness had to do with the fact the game was going to be shown on HDNet, which meant that not only would I [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Some Losses Are Worse Than Others

After having a few days to reflect on my UB Bulls losing to a hot-shooting Akron side in the MAC championship game Saturday night, I’ve finally realized why this was, as I said in text to a buddy from Buffalo after the game, not that “bad a loss” and “maybe not in the top ten.”
See, [...]

UB Bulls Beat: One More To Go

My intention was to do some posts while in Cleveland watching the MAC basketball tournament. Doing so requires some degree of sobriety, which my UB Bulls have made completely impossible by turning my first three days here into a balls-to-the-wall par-tay thanks to dipsatching Kent State on Thursday and beating Ball State 64-52 last [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Getting That Bye The Hard Way

The Big Picture: Bulls (11-5, 19-10) come from behind to knock off Miami (10-6, 17-12) in overtime 70-67 and claim a share of the MAC East regular season title and the all important MAC Tournament first round bye. Unfortunately and not surprisingly, Ohio (7-9, 14-16) did Buffalo no favors today, running for the [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Comeback Deux?

In danger of being run out of the gym during the first half of tonight’s critical MAC scrap at Kent State, the UB Bulls finished the first half on a 7-0 run to whittle a 36-24 Golden Flashes lead down to a mere five points, as the score stands at 36-31 at the half.
With big [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Un-Fucking-Believable! In a Good Way

The Big Picture: Wow! I still can’t believe this. Buffalo (10-4, 18-9) erases a 10-point deficit in the final three minutes of the game to beat Ohio (7-7, 14-14) 68-66 and remain in the hunt for the MAC East title and number one seed in the MAC. It was an epic [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Consider This Chance Blown…

The Big Picture: Bulls waste a great opportunity to cement lead in MAC East by blowing layups, missing freebies, and committing needless fouls on offense down the stretch. The end result was a 62-57 loss to Akron that allowed the Zips to catch the Bulls atop the MAC East with a 9-4 league [...]

Or Maybe It Is…

A 9-0 burst by Rodney Pierce has helped the Bulls close the gap to five points, 30-25, at the half.
Given that Pierce was en fuego like a bowl of phaal the half came at a bad time for Buffalo. However, the fact is that Buffalo (probably) can’t win beat the Zips if Hot Rod [...]

UB Bulls Beat: All Good Things Must Come To An End

Buffalo’s nine-game winning streak ground to a halt in Muncie today, as Ball State held off the Bulls 53-51 in a low-scoring, MAC dogfight. This was just one of those games where the Bulls weren’t able to survive a rare off game from Rodney Pierce, nor overcome missed freebies and missed blockouts down the [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Bullish About Defending

Make it seven wins in a row.
Tonight’s 56-55 victory over Central Michigan at Alumni Arena was win number two that came entirely because of the way the Bulls defended for 40 minutes. My internet connection decided to shut down at halftime and I wasn’t able to get it sorted until the game had [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Test Number Two

Buffalo gets a chance to put Saturday night’s debacle at Evansville behind them, as they square off with Upstate rivals Niagara (2-1) tonight. More so than the Evansville game, tonight represents a stiff test for a Bulls squad that I really still don’t know what to expect from this season. The Purple Eagles [...]

UB Bulls Beat: It’s Only Three Games

A lack of interior toughness may have done the Bulls in tonight, but the problems are deeper and more expansive than that. However, the frontcourt’s playing with more determination and intensity would be a welcome first step in getting ready for the always rugged, and always physical MAC. And getting ready for MAC play is really what the next nine games are all about.

So, yeah, three games into the 2008-09 college hoops season, I can honestly say that I don’t expect too much from this edition of my UB Bulls. But it’s only three games so there’s plenty of time for the Greg Gamble and Company to change my mind.

Things don’t look too good right now, but it’s only three games. It’s only three games. It’s only three games…

UB Bulls Beat: An Epitaph for The 2007-08 Buffalo Bulls Season

Going into another extended off-season for Buffalo Bulls hoops there seem to be two distinct and divergent takes on the direction of the program. There are those like the Buffalo News’ Bob DiCesare, who somehow think that the mere act of not getting humiliated when playing away from Alumni is a sign of progress [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Still Not Believing My Eyes

After checking the score on numerous websites, ESPN, and calling a fellow Buffalo alum, it seems that it’s true: the UB Bulls (10-18, 3-12) did run Bowling Green (13-15, 7-8) right the fuck out of Alumni Arena on Tuesday, to the tune of a 96-50 drubbing. Don”t know how this happened and I still can’t really explain it but that’s not going to stop me from giving it a bit of a shot.

Let’s begin with the obvious; this is a nice win for Reggie Witherspoon and his squad. It should give the Bulls some momentum heading into a challenging regular season-ending scrap at Ohio. And I’m glad they got the win but…

UB Bulls Beat: I Don’t Know What’s Worse…

here’s not much happening on UB Fan concerning Reggie Witherspoon’s job security right now. In fact, there’s not much of anything on UB Fan when it comes to hoops right now because the fan base, such as it was, has been demoralized by this team’s complete and utter collapse.

I have to think that Reggie’s job security can’t be good. For the third season in a row, Coach ‘Spoon’s squad has regressed and come undone in league play. The first time Kent State and Buffalo squared up this season, the Bulls played the Golden Flashes really tough before losing 68-63. Now this time, playing on their homecourt, the Bulls got run. Go fucking figure.

UB Bulls Beat: The Best Is Already Behind Us

At this point in the season, with it clear that my Buffalo Bulls are destined to finish in or very close to the MAC basement, calling a game critical, important, or of significance is pointless. Fact is, the final five or six games of this season for the Bulls are all about trying to [...]

UB Bulls Beat: Losing’s The Disease…

After starting MAC play 0-8 and not having won a road game since dinosaurs roamed the earth, UB (7-14, 1-8) got it going tonight in DeKalb, leading by double digits most of the game, as they cruised to a 89-81 win over the Northern Illinois Huskies (5-16, 2-7).

At first, I wasn’t going to make too much about Buffalo’s tonight because NIU is a truly terrible team but then I decided that, hell yeah, this is a huge win for coach ‘Spoon’s side. So pardon me while I get bit carried away.
