No Fat Chants

Beating a Virginia Military Institute (3-3) team that has beaten only one D1 team so far this season and lost 103-59 to Richmond isn’t on it’s face, all that an impressive a win. However, when you come into that game, played at VMI’s gym, with an offense that plays at a pace that can best be described as evolutionary in tempo (265th in tempo per Ken Pomeroy), and drop 111 points on the Keydets that’s saying something. And that’s exactly what Coastal Carolina did tonight, out-running-and-gunning VMI in a 111-97 win in a game that was the official tip-off to the 2009-10 Big South schedule.

While Duggar Baucom’s squad isn’t as good as it has been in previous seasons, this is still a good win for Cliff Ellis’s Chanticleers. And it’s one of a few that the 6-2 Chants have had so far this season.

Coastal Carolina began the season with a 70-59 over the always-respectable College of Charleston, and includes Valley and Big South scalps as well. With six underclassmen — including 6-2 frosh guard Kierre “Smooth” Greenwood, who played with a steadiness and fluency that equaled his nickname tonight — getting 9:00 MPG or more per game, you have to think the Chants will get better as the season goes on.

And that’s not good news for the rest of the Big South, as Coastal Carolina seems to be the cock of the walk in that league this season.
