While an 82-67 victory over D3 Daemen — a school known more for it’s physical therapy program than hoops — isn’t exactly the most inspiring of preseason performances, given the Orangemen’s loss to LeMoyne, those of us in the Bulls Nation should be plenty happy that we are able to do something that our friends — who still duck us! — from snowy upstate environs weren’t able to do. That is, beat a lower division team in the preseason.
This is a game you would’ve liked to have seen the Bulls win by about 40, but there are plenty of positives to take away from Saturday’s surprisingly close shave against the Wildcats. Here are three takeaways from tonight’s preseason tilt that should make any UB fan giddy as a dude dropping X with many, many beads at Mardi Gras.
1. Zach Filzen seems like a true sharpshooter. One of Buffalo’s biggest problems last season was prolonged scoring droughts due to the Bulls’ inability to so much as make a J. Filzen drilled seven triples tonight to lead the Bulls in scoring with 21 points. If he does that against a better class of competition, defending the Bulls becomes a challenging proposition for any coach in the MAC. Match-up zone my ass!
2. Call him the Ruud van Nistelrooy of the MAC, since senior big Max Boudreau just has a nose for the goal. He may have broken out at the 2009 MAC Tourney, but dude dropped 15 points on Daemen tonight, which seems to indicate that he’s just going to pick right up this season where he left off in Clevo.
3. The Truth may not have to do so much this season. Rodney Pierce put up solid numbers against Daemen — 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal — but nothing like last season when if Hot Rod didn’t score, then the Bulls were fucked.
