Not Ready For Primetime Part Deux

St. Mary's Patty Mills is outback tough

Has San Diego every shit the bed in tonights highly anticipated — by me at least — West Coast Conference scrap with 22nd-ranked St. Mary’s. Judged by their identical 4-0 records in WCC play, the Toreros versus Gaels seemed like it would be a heavyweight tilt. Especially since San Diego won the last time these two squads squared off on the Toreros homecourt. A meaningful WCC encounter is not what we got, as St. Mary’s made it clear that they were the only heavyweight in this battle, laying a 65-42 beatdown on the Toreros.

San Diego (4-1, 12-8), who has lost star point guard Brandon Johnson to injury for the rest of the season, is probably more of a nuisance to St. Mary’s (18-1, 5-0) and Gonzaga than they are actual competition for the WCC championship. Sometimes, a nuisance can be swatted a way with ease. That’s exactly what Patty Mills, Diamon Simpson, & Company did tonight — they swatted the Toreros away like they nothing but a pesky mosquito.

If you’re the Toreros, you should just be happy that the Gaels were content to merely swat you away instead of crushing you the way they did Pepperdine last Saturday.
