Summer Fun NBA Style

Busy day on the always-hectic off-season NBA crime blotter.

First off, we have Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, who’s been given the meaningless slap on his wrist of being suspended for the first two games of 2008-09 campaign by the Denver Nuggets. The suspension is the result of ‘Melo being busted for a DUI back in April.

As an aside, is their anything dumber than a multimillionaire getting busted for a DUI? If I can spring for a cab on my NYC employees salary on those nights I get so blotto that I can’t navigate the NYC subway system why can’t guys like ‘Melo and the Bills Marshawn Lynch, amongst countless others, do the same? Either shell out for a cab or pay one of your boys to be at the fucking ready when you need a ride.

Next up is New Orleans Hornets’ wing Rasual Butler who seemingly took the term “riding shotgun” literally, as he flashed his gat outside some club in Florida, and got charged with carrying a concealed weapon and improperly displaying a firearm. Don’t know what will happen to Butler but I still don’t understand why so many NBA players like to moonlight as heat-packing thugs when not playing.

Since we’re talking firearms, we might as well as bring up Aaron McKie, who, while no longer in the league, just had to get in on what passes for Summer fun for NBA players. According to Yahoo, McKie lied on a background check when he went to buy a couple of guns back in April. The purchase was denied, and McKie’s been charged with a felony according to the report. His lawyer says McKie, sought the guns to protect himself from the violence in his old Philadelphia neighborhood, which brings up another question: why is a guy who played in the NBA for 13-years and made millions of bucks running the streets in Philly?

We’ll probably never know but bless McKie for not allowing young bucks like Butler and ‘Melo to have all the gun-slinging, booze-chasing fun this summer.
