Because it’s a Mid-Eastern Conference game, last night’s shocking 68-62 victory by Maryland-Eastern Shore over Hampton didn’t get quite the amount of attention an upset of that magnitude deserves. Hell, even I was messing around on my Mac waiting for the USD-USF and St. Mary’s-Santa Clara games from the West Coast Conference instead of watching the “high seas stunner,” as the UMES website calls it, on ESPNU. And what a stuunner it was.
Heading into that game, the UMES Hawks had a record of 3-21 (1-8) to go with an RPI of 336 (out of 340) according to Ken Pomeroy. Meanwhile, the Hampton Pirates had a respectable RPI of 140 and were a win away from tying Norfolk State for second place in the MEAC with an 8-2 mark (13-8 overall).
In front of what sounds like it was rollicking crowd of 3000+ at the UMES campus in Princess Anne, Maryland, Hawks junior guard Ed Tyson put on a show for the audience there and watching on the U, leading all scorers with 24 points as UMES pulled off the ginormous upset.
It’s not going to get a lot of ink nationally but how many other games have their been this season where the difference in RPI was nearly 200 and the team on the lower end won? My guess is it’s zero.
Until proven wrong, Maryland-Eastern Shore’s ambush of Hampton is our college hoops upset of the year.
