Daily Fix: Are There Any Poor People In St. Louis?

This Man wants us all to be pro-choice
Was this the press conference where Rick Majerus said he’d only recruit pro-choice players?

Judging by the fact that Raymond Burke, Archbishop of the Diocese of St. Louis, has decided to wage a pointless public campaign against lovable St. Louis Billikens hoops coach Rick Majerus for Majerus’s daring to defy ossified Catholic dogma and state that he’s pro-choice, one would think there no other pressing issues the Archbishop has to attend to. I mean, what the fuck is wrong with Burke that he has nothing better to do than to ignite a public spat with a basketball coach?

One would think that Catholic Churches and Schools aren’t closing in the Gateway CityCity or that the Archdiocese doesn’t have a problem with principals in it’s schools “downplaying” the sexual assault of it’s 13-year old female students.

Clearly, Burke should be worrying about more important things. Like organizing his pointy hats or robes or anything other than what Rick Majerus thinks about abortion.

What does Burke think? That pregnant girls and woman will suddenly decide to get an abortion because “coach Majerus” is pro-choice? That Majerus’ stance will cause anti-choicers in the hickoid, flyover state of Mizzou to become pro-choice? Or does he think that all sports coaches, professors, employees, and students of St. Louis University must adhere to every outdated facet of Catholic dogma in order to work at or attend the University? Maybe Burke, in coordination with the Pope, can serve as both a hiring and admissions committee to ensure that no employees are pro-choice and no students use condoms.

At least this publicity whore would have something better to do with his time than pick a fight with an individual who did nothing other than exercise his Constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech.

With nitwits like Burke running dioceses in this country, it’s no wonder that Catholicism is increasingly irrelevant in the USA.

Well Majerus is Catholic, is he not? The Catholic Church teaches as well as many other Christian religions and other religions as well as common sense that abortion is killing another human being. Somewhere along the way Majerus missed that or wasn’t told that or doesn’t think it is important. He publicly stated that he is in favor of abortion, this is now a teaching moment for him and many other Catholics. Abortion is wrong it the killing of human in what should be safest place in the world, the mother’s womb.

Now you may not agree with that, but this is how it is for Catholics.

It is interesting when ever someone disagrees with the Catholic Church whether it’s abortion or gay marriage or embryonic stem research the response is “doesn’t the Catholic Church have more important matters to worry about” or “the Church should clean it’s own house up first”. The Church has a duty speak up so in 50 or 100 years when people come to their senses people won’t say “The Church was silent while all the babies were slaughtered in the womb.”

Ouch! :-) Great post. This guy could be spending his energy on something else, like walking around and talking to people.

I was drawn to the topic because I thought you were going to argue that Bill Gates could spend his time focusing on East St. Louis too, not just Bangladesh.
