It’s not only the BCS leagues that have been bitten and bitten hard by the upset bug this season.
On Sunday the SWAC got whacked by teams from the Red River Athletic Conference of the NAIA with something called Paul Quinn knocking off perennial SWAC title contenders Southern 84-81 and, here’s the real upset, Texas College outlasting this season’s SWAC preseason favorites Grambling State in OT, 86-82.
In the Jaguars defense, they did beat Southern Methodist on Saturday and they lost to a Paul Quinn squad led in scoring by a dude named Jazz Henderson, which has to rank in the all-time top ten of hoops names. If you’re going to get upset by an NAIA team, better it happen because a guy named Jazz is dropping 23 points on you than it is lose to team lead by a player with the same name as the obese, mama’s boy and Lane Meyer adversary in classic 80s flick — and favorite road trip movie of the Empire Supporters Club — Better Off Dead, as happened to the Tigers on Sunday. The fact that Texas College was led in scoring by junior guard CZYZ Bennett helps but it’s still not as cool a name as Jazz.
If nothing else this college hoops season, it seems that we’ll be able to count on upsets. They won’t always come due to the skills of guys named Jazz and CZYZ but they’re still going to come.
